Tweaking your modem
Last Updated on April 17, 2000 by Thomas McGuire - Page 2/7

Explanation of settings

Here is an explanation of each string setting, as taken from my modem manual.

AT%G1 enables a higher DTE rate of 230400. This may not work with all modems, unless they have a 25Hz clock speed, or fast serial port connection. Refer to your manual if unsure.

&F1 loads a read-only factory configuration (in this case) Hardware flow control template. (NOTE – Winmodem users should set this to &F).

&K3 disables MNP5 compression (which often added latency to connections).

S15=2 disables retrains.

S11=38 set the duration & spacing, in ms, for tone dialling (You can increase/decrease this value as you wish).

S27=16 disables MNP 2-4 compression.

S0=0 disables Auto-answer.

Users of Diamond Supra modems might want to try the following Init string. It works particularly well with those that have Rockwell chipsets.
AT&F&K3W2

Port settings

After entering the Init string, select the Advanced port settings tab.
Slide each of the bars to the far right, then Click Ok.

Next click on Change default preferences.

For users that have a 28.8/33.6K modem or a Winmodem (even if 56K/V90, this will minimize disconnections.) select the Port speed as 57600. For users who have a 56K/V90 modem use 115200.

Select Standard EC for Data protocol.

Set Compression to Enabled. Using the Init string from earlier the laggier components of hardware compression are disabled.

Set Flow control to Hardware unless you have a winmodem, in which case you should set it to Xon/Xoff.

Next click on the Advanced tab.

Set Data bits to 8, Parity to None, Stop bits to 1 & Modulation to Standard.
