Xteq X-Setup 6 Review

What’s New in Version 6?

Compared to Version 5.7, Version 6 is not so much a re-working/updating of all the Plug-ins & Wizards it contains, it’s more of an upgrade to the underlying program itself. It’s now easier to update X-Setup with new Plug-ins than before, it’s also safer to use & will hide Plug-ins which aren’t intended for your Operating System.

Or to put it a another way, X-Setup 6 is basically the same smelly old tramp you all know, but this time he’s been given a bath, had his liquor taken away & been given new clothes, oh man! Now, let’s get a bit deeper into the new features shall we?

X-Update

X-Update is Xteq Systems effort to make X-Setup easier to update with New/Update Plug-ins & Wizards for use. In the initial launch utility you simply select X-Update then Launch X-Setup X-Update to load this utility. Previously it was more of a case of going around to sites that offered the Plug-ins for download, then downloading & installing them yourself. Here’s what the X-Update utility simplifies this too;

X-Update simply connects to a server offering Plug-ins/Wizards & using the Status tab you can easily identify whether or not the Plug-in/Wizard available is New/Updated. All official files begin with XQ in their filename. Using Show Options you can automate this process a bit further by allowing Updated &/or New Plug-ins/Wizards to be automatically selected for download, or choosing not to display Plug-ins &/or Wizards at all (Probably best for more advanced users not to bother display the Wizards at all).

Once you’ve Ticked items that you want simply hitting Go! Update selected items! will download & install all the selected items, ready for to use whenever you next launch X-Setup 6.

The only minor niggle I had about this is that I’d like to have seen an Official Plug-in/Wizard server to check for any Updates. Although as Xteq’s CptSiskoX pointed out when I asked him about this;

In X-Setup by default it selects only -Updated- plug-ins (which means officially from Xteq) unless of course you have installed 3rd party ones using the "select new items" option or obtained plug-ins from someplace else on the Net or whatever & we place an updated copy of a 3rd party plug-in on it.  However, if people wish to stay strictly with official ones from us, just use X-Update & only use the default option, which is "select only updated items"

I guess I’m just used to the Windowsupdate style of product updates (Which only has relevant official Microsoft Operating System updates, as opposed to official & third party updates/files). That said I'd still have preferred if X-Update were to detect the New official Wizards/Plugins - which shouldn't really be too hard to add for for (All that would require is the ability for X-Update to check that the first 2 letters of the filename, if they were to begin with XQ then they would be automatically selected). Overall the Update feature is quite a handy utility all in all & run every week or so should keep you well updated (obviously) with all the latest Plugins & Wizards you'll need - As it is there have been multiple updates posted since the initial release of Version 6.
