The
models for players look quite good from afar, although upon
closer inspection you can see polygons popping through the
body. Particularly noticeable when arms are moving. I also
noticed some texture shimmering in certain parts of levels.
Still,
despite these problems, the game does give you some fairly
amazing views every now & then, from the predator like
effect of the stealth suit(s) to your initial encounter with
Metal Gear Rex.
The
camera angles in particular are great in many instances,
although a lot of the game feels to be viewed a la Tomb
Raider, albeit with the camera further back & up higher.
In
the Playstation version you might have noticed some sort of
motion blurring at use in certain parts of cut-scenes,
although (much like other things in the Playstation version)
this hasn’t make it into the PC version. This is probably
down to a hardware feature of the Playstation not available on
the PC, although 3dfx’s
T-Buffer (Supports Motion blur) could have been put to
good use in this respect.
Overall
the graphics are sufficient, but in no way does Metal Gear
Solid push your graphics card to the limits. A damned shame
really, like many out there I was expecting the PC version to at
least use higher resolution textures for player models
(Faces in particular). It doesn’t & to be honest I felt
this to be quite a lazy move.
